Footnotes
漢至明 玉雕把件及飾一組十件
The sinan pendant was a common type of jade amulet worn for apotropaic purposes during the Han dynasty. The spoon on the top represents the directional function of a compass, while also conveying the idea of divination and guiding the wearer towards good fortune and away from misfortune. It was believed that such a pendant should be worn when setting out on long journeys, as a talisman for good fortune. See a similar pendant in the shape of a sinan compass, Eastern Han dynasty, excavated from tomb no.1 at Fenghuangtai, Bozhou, Anhui Province, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China (中國出土玉器全集), vol.6, Beijing, 2005, p.115.
See a related white jade 'sinan' pendant, Han dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 20th May 2026, lot 3494.
