Born into a prominent Xiguan family in Guangzhou, Mrs Hu settled in Hong Kong after the Second World War with her husband, the civil engineer Ying-choi Hu, and together they prospered in construction, property and the restaurant trade. Over four decades she formed a collection of Chinese ceramics, paintings, calligraphy and works of art, enriched by the couple's close friendship with the painter and calligrapher Pu Ru, whom they hosted on his autumn visits to Hong Kong and who at times painted works on the spot to commemorate these gatherings.
