The Wengzhong figure was a type of jade object that emerged during the Han dynasty. According to legend, Ruan Wengzhong 阮翁仲, a formidable and brave general who served under Qin Shi Huang, was stationed at the frontier of the Qin Empire. When Xiongnu invaded, they would flee upon seeing Wengzhong. During the Han dynasty, this legendary figure was consequently fashioned in small jade sculptures, which were worn as protective amulets to ward off evil. A number of Han dynasty jade Wengzhong pendants are in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade (故宮博物院藏品大系玉器編), vol.4, Beijing, 2011, pls.171-182.
Later copies were also produced in subsequent periods. See a jade Wengzhong figure, Qing dynasty, and a jade figure, Republic period, both in the Collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.故玉001909N000000000 and 贈玉000252N000000000).
