Dong Gao was a Hanlin scholar, Grand Secretary, and painter and calligrapher at the imperial court during the Qianlong and Jiaqing eras. During the forty or so years in which he served as a close confidant to both emperors, he held numerous high offices. In addition, he served the Qianlong Emperor as a ‘ghostwriter’, meaning that many of the Emperor’s calligraphic works were in fact created by him. In the field of painting, he was particularly renowned as a landscape painter. The high esteem in which he was held at court is evident from the fact that, upon his death in 1818, the Jiaqing Emperor personally attended his funeral. He also likely created Buddhist figurative works, such as this image of the Buddha, for the court.
