The globular body supported on a low, flat base, rising to a long, slender neck encircled by a raised fillet, terminating in a wide flange beneath a bulbous mouth, emulating a lotus bud, applied with a realistically modelled elephant head forming the spout, its trunk raised and curled upward to act as the water channel, covered overall in an olive-green to pale celadon glaze with areas of earthen encrustation and subtle crazing, pooling gracefully in the recesses, fitted box.

This vessel is a rare and exceptional example of a (water sprinkler), a ritual form deeply tied to Buddhist practices transmitted along the Silk Road. The vessel is meticulously designed with a lotus-bud mouth at the summit for filling, paired with an imaginative zoomorphic spout modelled as a lively elephant head on the shoulder.
The elephant (), revered in Buddhism as a sacred protector and associated in secular contexts with strength and peaceful governance (), was a potent symbol in Court and religious art. The combination of a globular body, slender neck with a horizontal flange, and a sculptural zoomorphic head demonstrates the close stylistic interplay between contemporary metalwork. See a smaller bronze , Sui dynasty, from the collection of Edith and Stuart Cary, which was sold at Sotheby's London, 25 October 2023, lot 33.
Compare a smaller Hongzhou celadon-glazed similarly modelled with an elephant spout, Sui dynasty, excavated from Xinjian county, Jiangxi province, and now in the Jiangxi Provincial Museum, illustrated in , Nanchang, 1994, p.85. See also a pair of similar Hongzhou celadon-glazed , Sui dynasty, included in the , Museum of History, Taipei, 1996, cat.no.103.
