From right to left: God, Muhammad, Abu Bakr, Umar
These three tiles form the top row of a square panel, consisting of nine tiles when complete. Possibly depicting the mosque in Medina, the design references the gardens of paradise (jannah), with mosque lamps hanging from archways above trees (usually cypress and date palm) with a vase of flowers to the lower centre and further inscriptions between and below. A complete panel with the same border as the present lot remains in situ at the tomb of Mohi al-Din Arabi in Salihiyya, Damascus, Syria.
