Deeply carved with niches containing a central Buddha seated in bhumisparsha mudra, flanked by his principal disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, both standing. Sixteen seated arhats, each holding an attribute, surround the central group. The deeply cut recesses contrast with the otherwise plain surface, creating pronounced contrasts of light and shadow that enhance the sculptural quality of the figures. They are further highlighted in gold and pigments. For a comparable example with a plain background and deeply cut recesses, see HAR 20661. For a more elaborate 14th-century example with a similar arrangement of niches, see Christie's, New York, 21 March 2001, lot 92.
