The combination of underglaze blue, copper-red, and celadon glaze on this vase demonstrates technical virtuosity during the Kangxi period. The design was meticulously outlined with thoughtful spacing, serving an aesthetic function whilst acting as a structural barrier to prevent the unctuous pigments from running during firing. Owing to the notoriously volatile nature of copper-red in the kiln, the additional application of celadon glaze makes the successful firing of this piece an exceptional example.
A closely related vase of similar size (44cm high), decorated with the theme of Laozi and attendants, Kangxi, was sold at Bonhams San Francisco, 18 June 2007, lot 6361. Compare another similar 'phoenix tail' vase, Kangxi, which was sold at Christie's New York, 18 March 2016, lot 1514.
