Of rectangular form, the body carved in shallow relief with dense, swirling clouds, surmounted and supported by a crouching chi dragon at either side, each beast detailed with bulging eyes, pricked ears, and a bifurcated tail, the stone of pale green tone. 7.3cm (2 7/8in) high.

The chi dragon, a motif deeply rooted in Chinese antiquity, ranks among the most iconic designs in jade carvings and ancient bronzes. It is a legendary creature in ancient Chinese mythology, traditionally recognised as one of the nine sons of the dragon, frequently portrayed with tiger-like features as seen in the present lot.
