The Bactrian camel, capable of carrying heavy loads and enduring extremes of heat and cold, was an essential means of transport along the Central Asian routes linking northern China with the Western Regions. Its appearance in Northern Wei tomb sculpture reflects the increasing movement of foreign merchants, goods and, presumably, Buddhist missionaries along these routes. Camel figures became an established element of Northern Wei funerary assemblages, where they are typically depicted as pack animals carrying saddles, baskets or other loads. As (明器), such figures served a funerary purpose, providing the deceased with transport and access to the exotic goods associated with elite life.
