Fish ( 魚) are a long-established auspicious motif in Chinese art, their imagery operating through both visual symbolism and linguistic punning. As a homophone for (餘, 'surplus'), fish swimming in water convey wishes for abundance and ease, often encapsulated in the phrase ('may there be surplus year after year'). When the fish are identifiable as carp, the imagery also carries a more aspirational resonance, alluding to the well-known legend of the carp swimming upstream and leaping the Dragon Gate, thereby transforming into a dragon. This narrative, emblematic of perseverance rewarded with transformation and success, was frequently invoked within the cultured environment of the scholar's studio, where it served as a discreet metaphor for intellectual endeavour and advancement through effort.
The surrounding subsidiary motifs, including objects such as a rhinoceros-horn cup and an artemisia leaf, may be understood as elements drawn from the broader repertoire of the Eight Treasures ( 八寶), a flexible assemblage of auspicious emblems signifying cultivated taste, longevity, and prosperity, reinforcing the object's function as both a utilitarian implement and a bearer of auspicious meaning.
Compare with the carving of carp on waves on a cinnabar lacquer double-tier box and cover with fish and flower design, Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2006, p.26, no.16. More carvings of carp and dragons can be found on a green and cinnabar lacquer three-tier box and cover, mid Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in ., p.99, no.68.
