註：「我面對獅子林寫生，寫其起伏、寫其疏密、寫其綫之流竄、寫鑽出鑽進的大大小小的窟窿，畫面上於是掀起一陣點、綫、面的喧囂⋯⋯獅子林的意識流造型構成是抽象的，抽象的形式之美被尊奉於長廊、亭臺、松柏等具象的護衛之中，我突出此抽象造型，是有意發揚造園主人的審美意識。」—吳冠中
蘇州名園獅子林之假山千姿百態，為攝其神，吳冠中曾兩寫速寫稿。首稿作於一九八〇年，取石林局部，畫面幾盡為抽象綫條，按此衍發之彩墨畫後贈摯友朱德群。三年後，畫家另闢蹊徑寫成此稿，他刻意取全景構圖，在石群下方引入湖水，後方嵌遊廊與亭，按畫家解說，乃以具象元素為引，帶領觀者進入太湖石之林，令綫條起伏挑擢的抽象迷宮，免陷曲高和寡之弊，可謂「風箏不斷綫」觀點之示範作。吳冠中對再稿甚愜意，自許體現造園之旨，故同年即擴成寬近三米之彩墨鉅幅〈獅子林〉，該作復獲畫家挑選參加英美之重要展覽，而日後每繪獅子林，均循此稿。一紙速寫，已是畫家自我挑戰之力証！
