Of domed form, the upturned brim trimmed with fur surrounding a crown finely embroidered in pink, blue, green, and yellow threads with flowering prunus branches, all reserved against a vibrant purple ground beneath a red silk endless knot, suspending two trailing red silk streamers at the rear, each decorated with butterflies, flowering plants, and baskets inset with seed pearls.
Note:
Worn predominantly during the late Qing dynasty, the Kunqiu (困秋) or piaodaiguan (ribbon hat) was an informal autumn and winter hat for Manchu women. Falling outside official court dress regulations, it was paired exclusively with informal attire.
Tracing its origins to Jurchen beaded hats of the Liao and Jin dynasties, the hat features a fur-trimmed circular brim and a red, blue, or purple satin crown surmounted by a gaihua (cover flower) finial. Two long, embroidered ribbons—narrow at the top and flaring to pointed ends—trail from the back. For young women, these ribbons were typically rendered in vibrant colors such as red, green, shiqing (slate blue), or sky blue, with the most luxurious examples further embellished with pearls and jewels.

Comprising over 20 lots, this selection from the collection of Jon Eric Riis spans Chinese textiles and jade scholar's objects to Korean rank badges and paintings, assembled over decades of extensive travel across Asia.
Widely recognized as one of the nation's leading contemporary tapestry artists and a connoisseur of textiles, Riis developed a deep appreciation for ethnographic art during his childhood in Chicago, later formalizing his studies at The Art Institute of Chicago and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Following a 1970 Fulbright Scholarship to India to study indigenous textiles, he headed the Crafts Program at Georgia State University. After 25 years of creating major commissioned works for corporate and public spaces, Riis shifted his focus in the early 1990s entirely to his own fine art practice.
Today, his intricately woven tapestries, noted for their textured interplay of silk, metallic threads, and hand-stitched beadwork, are held in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. His mastery of the medium was further recognized with a 2011 United States Artists (USA) Windgate Fellowship in Craft, an honor he traveled to Los Angeles to accept at the Getty Museum. This profound technical understanding of historic craftsmanship is evident throughout his personal collection. The property offered this season presents a unique opportunity to acquire Asian works of art vetted by the discerning eye of a master artist.
