Of rectangular form with rounded indented corners and supported on a foot, intricately incised and painted using the qiangjin (engraved gold) and tianqi (filled-in) techniques, the top surface decorated with a lobed cartouche enclosing an official with three attendants within a lush landscape against a neat swastika diaper ground, the longer sides with two confronting five-clawed dragons in pursuit of a flaming pearl and the narrow sides with additional dragons, all framed by scrolling lotus sprays, the interior and base lacquered black, fitted box.

Boxes with rounded sides and indented corners were produced during the Wanli period and were likely used to store and present important documents and gifts. The present lacquer example is decorated using the technique, which involved filling outlined areas with lacquer of different colours, and , which consisted of inlaying gold into finely incised designs. The two techniques were often combined in Imperial lacquerware of this period, particularly in works featuring dragons and other symbols of Imperial authority. For example, see a red lacquer square box with engraved gold decoration of a dragon, cyclically dated to the Gengxu year of the Wanli reign (1610), illustrated in , New York, 1991, p.123, no.53. A related and lacquer 'dragon' box and cover, Wanli eight-character mark and of the period, dated 1604, was also sold at Sotheby's New York, 12 September 2018, lot 259.
In the present lot, however, the dragons are confined to the sides while the central cartouche encloses a scene of an official accompanied by his attendants. A related and lacquer square box, Wanli eight-character mark and of the period, dated 1610, similarly depicts a scholar and his attendants within a landscape, and is illustrated in , Hong Kong, 1993, pp.162-163, pl.85; and later sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 5 May 2025, lot 122. Compare also with a rectangular tray with basketwork sides, gilt decorated with a scholar and attendant, cyclically dated to Guichou of the Wanli reign (1613), illustrated by Lee Yu-kuan, , New York and Tokyo, 1972, p.201.
盒長方，蓋及底均作倭角，戧金填漆作畫。頂面作如意形開光，內有一高士漫步於山林之後，後有童子相隨，並以雙線方框作錦地以表現天空。開光外四角飾花卉，亦作雙線方框錦地，內有「卍」字紋。盒蓋及底邊沿均有龍紋，其中兩長邊作二龍戲珠，兩短邊作單龍紋，已現皇家制式。盒內及底髹黑漆，泥金填刻「大明萬歷辛丑年制」天干地支款，為萬曆朝漆器常見。
此類倭角盒，萬曆時期所製，或用以貯藏及饋贈重要文書禮品。本品採用填漆與戧金兩種技法：填漆，即於漆器表面雕刻紋樣，隨後在刻痕內填諸色漆料；戧金，即於雕刻紋樣中打金膠或貼金箔。兩種工藝技法於當時宮廷漆器中常合而用之，尤見於飾有龍紋及其他帝王象徵之器物。例如一件萬曆庚戌年（1610年）款剔紅戧金龍紋方盒，著錄於《East Asian Lacquer: The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection》，紐約，1991年，頁123，編號53。另參考一件萬曆八字紀年款（1604年）戧金填漆龍紋蓋盒，售於紐約蘇富比，2018年9月12日，拍品編號259。
本蓋盒之龍紋飾於四側，中央開光內繪一官員偕侍從之景。參考一件萬曆朝戧金填漆方盒，底刻「大明萬曆庚戌年製」款，亦繪文士及侍從於山水之間，著錄於《中國漆藝二千年》，香港，1993年，頁162至163，圖版85；後售於香港邦瀚斯，2025年5月5日，拍品編號122。又可比對一件萬曆朝長方盤，戧金繪文士及侍從，刻萬曆癸丑年（1613年）紀年款，見李汝寬，《Oriental Lacquer Art》，紐約、東京，1972年，頁201。
