Footnotes
The present painting depicts a fierce tiger poised atop an ochre rocky outcrop, its eyes wide with intensity. Its mighty roar seems to stir the wind, while the ink bamboo behind it bends and sways in response. A few branches of crimson autumn leaves enliven the scene with subtle accents of color.
The painting was executed one year after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. By this time, Zhang Shanzi had relocated with his family from Suzhou to western China. In early 1938, he traveled to Kunming, where he embarked on a series of fourteen patriotic paintings inspired by historical loyalists. These paintings were subsequently exhibited in Chongqing, Kunming and other cities in southwestern China. Later in the year, before returning to Chongqing to prepare for fundraising exhibitions abroad together with his younger brother Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), in support of the war effort, Zhang Shanzi converted from Buddhism to Christianity in Kunming.
Against this historical backdrop, the tiger, Zhang Shanzi's most celebrated subject, takes on a powerful symbolic significance, embodying the indomitable spirit and resilience of the Chinese nation in a time of crisis.
