The histories and religious traditions of northern Thailand and Laos are closely intertwined, reflecting centuries of political interaction and cultural exchange. As a result, Lao Buddhist art developed in close dialogue with the sculptural traditions of the northern Thai kingdom of Lan Na, particularly those centred around Chiang Mai. The present sculpture displays stylistic characteristics associated with both northern Thai and Lao artistic traditions reflecting the close artistic exchange between the two regions. Features often encountered in Lao sculpture include the elongated face, neck, and body, long tapering fingers, high arched eyebrows and eyelids, short nose, and small, delicately modelled mouth. Elements recalling northern Thai, or Lan Na, models may be seen in the treatment of the robes and the stylised curls of hair. Comparable examples can be found in the Museum Rietberg, Zurich (RHI 625) and the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore (2010-04950).
