This figure appears again in a larger group, likely depicting justice, attributed by Andreina d'Agliano to Cozzi rather than Doccia, which is part of a private European collection. The group is published by the author in the exhibition catalogue Geminiano Cozzi e le sue porcellane, 2016, pp.375. Several single dwarves are illustrated under cat. nos. 1-19 - a series to which this figure also likely belonged.
The series of Nani or dwarves made by the Cozzi factory were in part modelled after the Callotto Resucitato, re-edited by Stamperia Remondini, and based on the Eingerichtes Zwergen Cabinet by Martin Engelbrecht (1710-15). d'Agliano (op.cit., p.373) notes that the Nani modelled by Geminiano Cozzi were less grotesque, and more illustrative in their clothing and pursuits of daily life.
Other factories, including Doccia, created similar figures. But the figure of a judge is rare. Another dwarf with similarities to this figure and identified by Angela Caròla Perrotti as the Italian statesman and reformer Bernardo Tanucci (1698-1783) was created at the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea. One such figure was sold in these rooms, 7 December 2017, lot 42.
