Although dragon motifs frequently adorn the aprons of standard-sized tables, the distinctive ball-and-claw feet and lion masks featured on the present lot appear to be a design element reserved specifically for beds and kang tables.
Compare a similar huanghuali kang table of comparable size, sharing the ball-and-claw feet and lion masks, illustrated by Grace Wu Bruce in Dreams of Chu Tan Chamber and the Romance with Huanghuali Wood: The Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1991, pp. 86-87, no. 30, and subsequently sold at Christie's New York, 20th September 2002, lot 10. See another closely related example, distinguished by an unusual convex waist, published in Nicholas Grindley, June 1998, no. 11. A further related example of slightly larger proportions was sold at Christie's New York, 13th September 2019, lot 873.
龍紋雖常見於一般尺寸桌案之牙條，然如本品所見之獅面及戲珠式腿足，則似乎為床榻及炕桌專屬之設計。
