Lotus and a pair of mandarin ducks, flowering shrubs and garden rocks. Dated 1770, two hanging scrolls, ink and colours on blue-tinted paper. Each with an inscription and the artist’s signature in the top left corner: ‘In the year of Gengyin (1770), in the 6th month of summer/in the 3rd month of spring, Zengsan Yu Xing’. Each bears a seal of the painter: “Seal of Yu Xing” (Yu Xing zhi yin).

Yu Xing, also read as ‘Yu Sheng’, whose given name was Zengsan, was a famous court painter at the imperial court during the Qianlong era (1736-1795). He specialised in flowers and birds and was highly esteemed by the Qianlong Emperor. Many of his works bear the Emperor’s own inscriptions and were included in the imperial catalogue Shiqu baoji - Partially restored and minor age-related damage
