Hariti, an ogress who devoured children in the northeastern Indian city of Rajagriha, was converted to Buddhism by the Buddha, who hid her favorite child to make her understand the suffering she had caused other mothers. She thereafter vowed to protect children and the Buddhist monastic community.
Compare the child appearing from behind the crossbar of the throne back with that in a 2nd-century stele in the Peshawar University Museum; see Luczanits et al., Gandhara: The Buddhist Heritage of Pakistan, exh. cat., 2008, p. 156, cat. no. 105. Compare also the coiffure, pendant jewel on the forehead, and wreath encircling the head with those of a 3rd-century seated Hariti published in Dehejia, , exh. cat., 1999, p. 306, cat. no. 62.
