Each chair with a curved crest rail that is raised on a jichimu C-shaped backsplat above a mat seat and cusped, beaded apron and spandrels, the whole raised on legs of rounded-square section joined by stepped stretchers.
Colloquially this type of rectangular-back chair is known as an ‘official’s hat’ chair, because the curved crest rail resembles the winged hat that was part of the formal dress traditionally worn by officials during the Ming dynasty. In English the descriptive term ‘yokeback’ is also used, although it has nothing to do with Chinese nomenclature.
Unlike the armchairs of this type, the side chairs were less formal and easier to sit in. Produced in sets, these chairs were customarily arranged along the walls when not in use. They were light enough to be easily moved into position for informal dining, work, or leisure activities.
The chair represents one of the most commanding and monumental forms within classical Chinese furniture. The chair’s tall, supportive splat promotes an upright, dignified posture, bringing stature and dignity, while the projecting crest rail with rounded terminals behind the sitter’s head imparts a strikingly imposing presence.
*Please note: prospective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory and tortoiseshell as well as certain hardwoods such as huanghuali and zitan. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country outside of the EU.
