Mahakali belongs to the group of Astamatrikas, or Eight Mother Goddesses, a powerful assembly of female deities revered in both Hindu and Buddhist Tantric traditions across South Asia. She is a fierce, protective form of the goddess Kali and, as one of the Matrikas, embodies the shakti (divine feminine energy) of Mahakala, the wrathful manifestation of Shiva. The sculpture's strongly triangular composition reinforces the impression of her unassailable power.
Among the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley, the Astamatrikas are revered as guardian deities whose influence extends beyond the individual to the protection of the city itself. Their shrines form an integral part of the Valley's sacred landscape, and they remain central to local ritual, festival traditions, and Tantric worship.
