The motif of a bannerman riding a galloping horse has been interpreted as depicting a messenger rushing back to Court with news of victory. It has therefore been suggested that snuff bottles bearing this design were produced to commemorate military campaigns, including the conquest of Xinjiang by the Qianlong Emperor in 1759. For a full discussion of this motif, see H.Moss, V.Graham and K.B.Tsang, , vol.2.2, Hong Kong, 1998, pp.336-337, where a related 'bannerman' snuff bottle, attributed to the 'Official School', Qianlong period, is illustrated (no.305), and was later sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 25 November 2013, lot 46.
