The present lot reflects the 17th-century revival of interest in mythical beasts and ancient lore, fueled in part by the study and publication of ancient texts, particularly the Shanhai jing (山海經, Classic of Mountains and Seas), a compendium encompassing geography, natural history and mythology. The publication of increasingly accessible illustrated editions from the late 16th century onwards introduced a wealth of fantastical creatures and imagery into the decorative arts.
