Literature

The distinctive faceted shape of this wall pocket is unique to Vauxhall, as is the sgraffito decoration to the border. Wall pockets of this kind are recorded in three patterns, see the pair illustrated by Bernard Watney, 'Four Groups of Porcelain Possibly Liverpool', ECC Trans, Vol.5, Pt.1, 1960, pl.28(e) and the example illustrated by Mary White, 2023, p.399 respectively for the other two designs, the latter sold by Bonhams on 1 December 2025, lot 63. They appear to have been produced in just this one size, significantly smaller than other models found in contemporary English pottery and porcelain. They likely would have been issued in pairs. A companion wall pocket to the present lot was sold by Bonhams as part of the Garrick Bond Collection on 17 May 2017, lot 239.
