The inscription may be translated as:
The traveller's boat follows the limpid waves, drifting gently upon the midstream. Frost-touched woods hold the chill of the season, while clouds and the surrounding landscape are suffused with serene tranquillity.
Pu Ru (溥儒) (1896–1963), also known as Pu Xinyu (溥心畬), was a member of the Qing Imperial family and a leading figure of the 20th century Chinese literati painting. Born into the Manchu Imperial family, he was a cousin of the last Qing Emperor, Puyi (溥儀), and received a rigorous classical education in Confucian scholarship, poetry, calligraphy, and painting, which profoundly shaped his refined artistic vision. Following the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911, Pu Ru dedicated himself to painting and calligraphy, earning recognition as one of the most distinguished artists of his generation. His works, often executed in the scholarly tradition, feature landscapes, birds, and figures imbued with poetic sentiment. His creation was strongly influenced by the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty and earlier literati aesthetics. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Pu Ru relocated to Taiwan, where he continued to paint and teach. Throughout his career, his style remained deeply rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics, characterised by expressive brushwork and a cultivated, scholarly sensibility.
