The present lot belongs to a group of black carved lacquerware decorated with floral designs that flourished during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The intricately rendered veins of the flowers, which convey a remarkable sense of texture, together with the depth created by the overlapping leaves, and the overall freedom and vigour of the carving, point to a mature Song or Yuan style.
A related black lacquer 'chrysanthemum' dish, 13th century, is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum and is illustrated in , Tokyo, 2004, no.31.
