Dr. Richard H. Eckhardt (d. 1993) and Mrs. Mary Eckhardt, both of San Antonio, Texas, met at the University of Texas and then married in 1942. During the Second World War, Dr. Eckhardt served in various parts of Europe, including Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and France. Following the war, the Eckhardts lived in Tokyo from 1947 to 1952, where Dr. Eckhardt practiced medicine and the couple built an expansive collection of Asian art. The present lot was acquired during that time. The two were also connoisseurs of opera, and Mary amassed a collection of English literature in the 1950s.
理查德·H·埃克哈特博士（Dr. Richard H. Eckhardt，卒於1993年）與其夫人瑪麗·埃克哈特（Mrs. Mary Eckhardt）均為德克薩斯州聖安東尼奧人，二人在德克薩斯大學相識，1942年結婚。第二次世界大戰期間，埃克哈特博士服役於歐洲多地，包括比利時、盧森堡、德國及法國。戰後，夫婦二人於1947至1952年間旅居東京，博士於當地行醫，二人並建立了一批規模可觀之亞洲藝術收藏，本品即得於此時。夫婦亦雅好歌劇，瑪麗更於1950年代匯集了一批英國文學珍藏。
