Footnotes
宋/明 瑪瑙雕羊形佩
The image of the ram (yang 羊) has long been an auspicious motif in China, owing to its homophonic association with xiang (祥), meaning 'propitious' or 'lucky.' Over time, the symbolism of the ram expanded through its phonetic connection with yang (陽), denoting the sun and the active, warm, and masculine principle in Chinese cosmology.
See a similar agate carving of a ram, Ming to Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, in the Palace Museum, Taipei (故玉006180N000000000).
