Hat stands served a practical purpose within Qing interiors, providing a dedicated support for the elaborate headwear worn by members of the Court and officials. As hats were an important component of Qing dress and a visible indication of rank carrying delicate finials and feathers, they were carefully removed and placed on stands when not in use. Some more elaborate examples incorporated hollow or pierced sections for fragrant substances, allowing the hat to be perfumed with incense. By the Qianlong period, such utilitarian furnishings had become objects of considerable artistic refinement, executed in precious materials and often incorporating archaistic forms and auspicious decoration.
