Whilst the identity of the sage riding a donkey is the subject of debate, the figure in the present lot shown holding a prunus spray is identified by K.B.Tsang in 'Who is the Rider on the Donkey?', , Summer 1994, pp.4-16, as the Tang dynasty scholar and poet Meng Haoran (孟浩然, circa 690–740), who allegedly searched for plum blossom on a snowy day and was later widely depicted in this manner.
A related snuff bottle, Qing dynasty, is illustrated in , Taipei, 1974, no.42.
A chalcedony snuff bottle of the same subject, 18th/19th century, was sold at Christie's New York, 19 September 2007, lot 696.
