说明:Superbly cast and sumptuously decorated in gold inlay with an intricate design of clouds, the present object is a masterwork of ceremonial art, while retaining its utilitarian function as a crossbow trigger. The cloud pattern is reminiscent of that found on contemporaneous lacquer. See for example the design on a Warring States period lacquer tray from the Low-Beer collection, preserved in the National Museum of Asian Art, accession no. F1954.19. Compare also a mechanism of much simpler type, inlaid with scrollwork only on one face, illustrated in Jessica Rawson and Emma Bunker, Ancient Chinese and Ordos Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1990, pl. 106, where Rawson writes, p. 94. ‘an unusual feature is the use of gold inlay…This decoration suggests that the trigger was part of a prestige piece rather than one for daily use, and was perhaps made for ceremonial rather than for actual use’. A silver-inlaid bronze trigger, complete with its crossbow casing, was sold in our New York rooms, 19th September 2023, lot 215.
