Anthony du Boulay (1929–2022) was a renowned British expert in Chinese porcelain. He served as Director of the Asian and European Ceramics and Works of Art Department at Christie's, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the market for Chinese ceramics. Over his career, he became a leading authority on the subject, publishing influential books, including (1973) and (1984). Known for his discerning eye and deep knowledge, du Boulay was also a respected lecturer and consultant, sharing his expertise with museums, institutions, and private collectors.
Commissioned for export to Europe, this vessel would have been modelled on a silver or pewter prototype. Single handed porringers were produced solely for the English market as they were not used in Continental Europe. For an English decorated Dehua porringer, see the Victoria & Albert Museum, collection no.C.40-1970.
