Compare with a square cinnabar lacquer dish, but with buffalos at pasture, mid-Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2006, pp.130–131, no.97. The theme of scholars visiting or gathering with friends, accompanied by attendants amid terraced gardens and pavilions, can also be seen on a square dish of the Yongle period, illustrated in ., no.33, and another square dish, also of the Yongle period, no.39. Such scenes evoke the cultivated ideal of scholarly friendship and leisurely retreat, in which the meeting of like-minded companions provides an occasion for conversation and appreciation of the natural surroundings. Compare also the depiction of a scholar beside a pavilion beneath a pine tree on a circular cinnabar lacquer box and cover, Xuande six-character mark and of the period, illustrated in , Taipei, 1998, p.49, no.29.
