Of teardrop shape graduating to a flared neck, flat rolled rim and wide mouth, the stunning bottle finely enameled with three peonies issuing from a moss-green bank of rocky outcroppings, the delicate leaves and petals a pink-white color visible on both sides of the clear glass body, the scene set under a ruyi collar below a wide yellow and blue key fret band at the neck, the narrow, oval foot rim enclosing the four-character mark.

Enameled clear glass snuff bottles with Qianlong marks executed in the Imperial Workshops are quite rare and their enamels fragile. At this early stage in their employment in the palace, bird and flower designs such as this example were quite sumptuous in color and yet simple, covering the entire surface for decoration. See lot 156 in this sale formerly in the Monimar collection and the commentary by Clare Lawrence (Chu), , pp. 14-15, pl. 81. A brilliant example of a transparent enameled glass bottle, Yuanming Yuan, 1767-1799 is in the Crane Collection, bottle ID 00202. Compare a clear glass enameled snuff bottle Imperial, Qianlong mark, in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in , Taipei, 1991, no. 2, p. 78. An enameled opaque white glass bottle of related composition, Qianlong mark and of the period, from the Emily Byrne Curtis Collection, was sold in these rooms, 21 September 2021, lot 637. See a delicately painted clear glass enameled bottle, Imperial Workshops, 1770-1799, from the Meriem Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 19 March 2008, lot 304.
