Footnotes
清乾隆 剔紅花卉紋菊瓣式蓋盒
Provenance: Sir George Mowlem Burt KBE (1884–1964), Surrey, and thence by descent
來源:大英帝國爵級司令勛章獲得者George Mowlem Burt爵士(1884-1964),英國薩裏,并由後人保存迄今
Born in Westminster on 10 January 1884, Sir George Mowlem Burt KBE joined the family firm, John Mowlem & Co., in 1902, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle. He subsequently became supervising director of the company and was involved in a number of major engineering and building projects. He was a prominent figure in the development of the civil engineering industry, serving as a founding member of the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors and on various Government committees and missions. He was also Master of the Worshipful Company of Paviors. Outside his professional life, Burt was a distinguished fencer, winning the British épée championship in 1922 and representing Great Britain in épée at the 1920 Olympic Games. He was knighted in 1942 and died at Blindley Heath, Surrey, on 1 September 1964. An enthusiastic collector of art, his collection included paintings, ivory, netsuke and jade.
The present box belongs to a distinctive group of finely carved cinnabar lacquer wares produced during the Qianlong period, when lacquer carving attained an exceptionally high degree of refinement. The chrysanthemum-petal form, closely following the contours of a flower in full bloom, is enhanced by the dynamic arrangement of flowering plants issuing from leafy stems, with the sharp and precisely controlled carving creating a highly detailed and naturalistic effect.
Two very similar cinnabar lacquer 'chrysanthemum' boxes and covers, Qing dynasty, are in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.nos.故文000071N000000001 and 故文000070N000000001); a pair of similar boxes, Qianlong six-character marks and of the period and inscribed Yishou Baohe ('Precious Box of Longevity') in the Shenyang Palace Museum, is illustrated in , Shenyang, 2017, p.80; another carved cinnabar lacquer circular box, Qianlong, of related design is in the Tianjin Art Museum, illustrated in , Fuzhou, 1993, pl.220; and a plain chrysanthemum-petal box, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, in the Qing Court Collection, is illustrated in , Shenzhen, 2006, p.216, no.165.
Compare also with a pair of cinnabar lacquer chrysanthemum-form boxes and covers, 18th century, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 3 June 2015, lot 2921.
