Footnotes
十八/十九世紀 玉雕貓捕鼠把件 一組兩件
The cat (mao 猫), a homophone of mao (耄, 'advanced age'), is a traditional symbol of longevity in Chinese art. The kitten may further express wishes for the continuation of the family line, while the depiction of the cat catching a mouse recalls the traditional role of the cat in protecting grain and crops from vermin, and was consequently associated with the safeguarding of household prosperity and the hope for a good harvest. The lively interaction between the animals thus combines auspicious wishes for longevity and familial continuity with a familiar and playful subject from everyday life.
Compare with a group of three white jade and celadon jade 'feline' groups, Ming/Qing dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 5 December 2023, lot 5539.
