Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, presides over Tushita Heaven, seated in bhadrasana on a lotus throne with his hands raised in dharmachakra mudra. Crowned and richly adorned, he is flanked by lotuses supporting the wheel and kundika associated with his iconography. Bodhisattvas, monks and celestial figures populate the surrounding realm.
Tushita is conceived as an extensive palatial landscape enclosed within a circular golden border. Tiered pavilions rise among dense clusters of blue and blue-green foliage, while a lotus-filled pool occupies the foreground. Banks of white and blue clouds articulate the celestial landscape. The saturated palette of cobalt blue, green, vermilion and gold complements the crisp delineation of the architecture and subsidiary figures.
Close stylistic parallels for the palatial architecture, densely patterned foliage, cloud formations, figure types and saturated palette appear in two 19th-century Tibetan paintings in the Rubin Museum of Art, New York (F1997.4.1 & P1994.12.2). These stylistic traditions continued into the early 20th century, as seen in a thangka of Amitabha in Sukhavati (HAR 32922). A related depiction of Maitreya in Tushita Heaven was sold at Bonhams, New York, 19 March 2019, lot 914.
