This figure belongs to a distinctive Western Tibetan idiom of the 11th and 12th centuries, in which a local sculptural language absorbs the conventions of eastern Indian Pala bronzes. Pala conventions are assimilated down to the smallest passages —the high braided chignon, the patterned sash, the thickly hemmed dhoti with its incised floral ground, and the incised petals and blossoms of the base. The lotus stem is handled with particular care, growing from the base with incised detailing and paired leaves before passing through the god's fingers. Comparable figures frequently formed part of a triad of the Three Lords, grouped with Vajrapani and Avalokiteshvara, and many have since become separated from the bases on which they were originally mounted, cast separately. The present lot retains its own: a single tier of lotus petals set between beaded rims. Compare a figure of Padmapani for the treatment of the lotus stem, and a Manjushri triad for the modelling of the figure and the lotus base, both published in von Schroeder, , 1981, pp. 174-176, pls. 31E and 32B.
