Five Dynasties/Northern Song Dynasty
The globular body surmounting a trumpet mouth, flanked by two pairs of loop handles at the base of the neck, finely decorated with large panels of 'chrysanthemum' medallions and smaller panels of leafy plants, the panels separated by raised ribs and bowstrings, all supported on a shallow ring foot, covered inside and out with a thin olive-green glaze pooling to darker tones at the recess, under the foot with five unglazed patches to receive kiln support, revealing the buff gray stoneware body.

The form of the present jar appears to be unique, although there was precedent for the combination of bulbus body surmounting a trumpet neck with four small loops at the base of the neck. Compare, for example. the Tang dynasty Yue vase of closely-related form in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated on the Museum's website, no. 新00124515. The potting of present lot is extremely refine and with thoughtful placements of the panels and loop handles. The free-hand incised design and the silky green glaze are unmistakenly the best characteristics of Yue celadons.
