The inscription may be translated as:
Gulls gather by the Xiang courtyard, emerald clouds reflecting the dragon in the wine cup; Phoenixes perch beside the bright pool, orange clouds comb the moonlight through the curtains. Written in the autumn of the Xinmao year, at the Wei Pavilion in Songzhuang, recorded by Gang.
Wei Ligang 魏立剛 was born in Datong, Shanxi Province. At the age of 17, he entered the Mathematics Department of Nankai University, where he developed the rigorous logical and analytical skills that would later inform his artistic practice. During his university years, he served as president of the university's calligraphy society, studying classical poetry and epigraphic scripts under the supervision of the local masters Li Henian (1912-2000), Wang Xuezhong (1925-2013), and Sun Boxiang (1934-). After graduating from Nankai University in 1985, Wei Ligang became a teacher in Taiyuan and immersed himself in the legacy of Fu Shan (1607-1684), the renowned calligrapher and art theorist during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. From the mid-1990s onward, he increasingly engaged with abstract painting and international contemporary art. During the 1990s, he emerged as a leading young practitioner of modern calligraphy, participating in and organising a number of influential exhibitions that helped shape the movement.
Wei Ligang has continually expanded the expressive possibilities of calligraphy, pushing the medium beyond the boundaries of conventional script. His eclectic sources of inspiration encompass ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, industrial civilisation and modern machinery, European castles and palaces, contemporary physics and astronomy, as well as the structures and forms of plants and animals. In the present lot, elegant black lines move fluidly across a luminous gold ground, combining the spontaneous, gestural energy of abstract expressionism with the archaic grid-like structure of Chinese writing. The result is a dynamic synthesis of calligraphic tradition and contemporary abstraction.
Wei Ligang's works held in numerous major institutional and private collections, including the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; British Museum, London; Cernuschi Museum, Paris; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle; National Museum of China, Beijing; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; François-Henri Pinault Family, France; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; among others.
