The four-character inscription in the interior of the cover reads (尋春寶盒), which may be translated as 'Treasured Box for Seeking Spring'.
The Qianlong Emperor oversaw the production of Court lacquer wares, including specially commissioned carved cinnabar lacquer , or 'treasure boxes', bearing four-character names in addition to Imperial reign marks. According to the archives of the Imperial Palace Workshops, , a number of such boxes were produced between 1771 and 1775. See Lin Mun-lee, , Taipei, 2008, p.117.
The present box is closely related to this group in its deeply carved landscape decoration and sophisticated knife-work. Compare the quadrilobed boxes and covers illustrated in , pp.121-123, nos.109-113. Further related examples from the Qing Court Collection include two pentalobed boxes and covers decorated with figures in landscape scenes and floral cartouches, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2006, pp.12-15, nos.7 and 8; see also a circular box and cover depicting a figure traversing a landscape beneath the moonlight, with six panels of floral sprays to the sides, illustrated , pp.42-43, no.26.
