This set of exotic bird paintings is rendered on pith paper, a material derived from the soft tissue on the interior of the stalk of the Tongcao (通草, Tetrapanax papyrifer) plant. Popularized in the early 19th century as a medium for Chinese paintings produced in Guangdong for export, pith paper is produced by soaking the plant stalk in water and then slicing into thin sheets. The result is a bright white ground that readily absorbs both watercolors and tempera. Due to the high absorbency, the pith expands and raises, giving texture and depth to the painted image, with the unpainted areas retaining their vivid whiteness, reminiscent of porcelain.

此組珍禽圖繪於通草紙上，該種紙張取材自通草莖幹內部的質地輕白髓質。十九世紀初，此材漸為廣東外銷畫所廣用，其製法乃將植物莖幹浸水後，刨削成薄片以成紙。通草紙色澤瑩白，吸水性強，無論水彩或蛋彩皆能附著。因紙質纖維遇水膨脹，著色處微顯凸起，視覺效果細膩而富層次。未施彩處則潔白明亮，頗類瓷釉之瑩潤光澤，饒有瓷板畫的韻致。
