Jiajing six-character mark, Late Ming Dynasty
Of rectangular form with lobed corners, the well carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer with blossoms wreathed in foliage within a thick border of leafy floral design, the exterior similarly decorated with floral border, all reserved on a diaper ground, the recessed base lacquered black and engraved with an apocryphal mark, fitted box.

See a closely related cinnabar lacquer rectangular tray with similar floral design, Wanli, from the Avery Brundage Collection, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (acc.no.B64M4). The treatment of the foliage on the present lot is also comparable to that on a cinnabar lacquer box, 16th century, in the Qing Court Collection and illustrated in , Taipei, 2008, p.62, no.40.
See a related carved cinnabar lacquer rectangular scroll tray, Ming dynasty, carved with two long-tailed pheasants amidst floral blossoms enclosed by a floral border, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot 2916.
長方盤弧壁斜敞，四隅微委，淺腹平底，直角圈足。盤內外及足沿髹朱漆，包漿明潤；足內髹黑漆，刻有「大明嘉靖年制」款。盤心隨形開光，以錦紋為地，雕飾花卉，錯落有致。一花碩麗，綻於高枝，餘朵嬌小，含蕊低垂。弧壁內外亦作錦地，同雕花卉，枝葉疏朗秀逸。整器秀美，紋飾相互呼應，渾然一體。
參考舊金山亞洲藝術博物館Avery Brundage收藏一件相似之萬曆時期剔紅花卉紋長方盤（館藏編號B64M4）。本品枝葉之處理，亦可與清宮舊藏一件十六世紀剔紅雙鳥牡丹方盒作比較，見《和光剔彩：故宮藏漆》，台北，2008年，頁62，編號40。
參考一件明代剔紅花鳥圖長方軸盤，售於香港佳士得，2018年11月28日，拍品編號2916。
