Left cabinet: The left burlwood panel of the hat chest is constructed from three boards, whereas the remaining panels appear to be of single-board construction. There is a vertical crack running along the side of this panel. The lower right panel of the compound cabinet is slightly loose. Otherwise with wear consistent with age and use.
Right cabinet: The right door of the hat chest does not close completely flush. Both burlwood panels display vertical cracks, with an additional crack visible along the left side. The lower left and right burlwood panels have minor losses and defects. The metal mounts are slightly tarnished. There are minor variations in colour between several burlwood panels.
