If a condition report is provided to assist you with assessing the condition of the lot, it is for guidance purposes only. Such condition report may not refer to all faults, restoration, alterations, or adaptations because Sotheby's is not a professional conservator or restorer but rather a condition report is a statement of subjective, qualified opinion genuinely held by Sotheby's. 说明:This rare cup, with its subtle guan glaze so admired during the Southern Song dynasty, exemplifies the understated aesthetic favoured by the cultured scholar-officials of the period. The present vessel can be attributed to one of the guan ('official') kilns established at Hangzhou, the Southern Song capital, to supply ceramics for the court following the relocation of the imperial house to the South in 1127, when access to the celebrated northern manufactories, including the Ru kilns at Baofeng in Henan, was lost. The Jiaotanxia ('Below the Suburban Altar') kilns, believed to have produced wares such as this cup for the court, have tentatively been identified with kiln sites discovered at Wuguishan, south of Hangzhou.
Compare a similar guan celadon-glazed cup of the same size, described as a brushwasher, exhibited in The Arts of the Sung Dynasty, vol. 32, Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1959, cat. no. 164; and another related example in the National Museum of Asian Art, Washington, D.C., illustrated in Oriental Ceramics: The World's Great Collections, vol. 9, Tokyo, 1981, pl. 45. See also a similar 'Jiaotanxia' guan bowl offered in these rooms, 9th November 2005, lot 270; and a Longquan celadon cup imitating 'Jiaotanxia' guan ware, of closely related form and size, in the Huzhou City Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, vol. 8, Shanghai, 1999, pl. 65.
