Provenance:
Acquired from Madame Kuniko Okamura, wife of Michel Dubosc, 6 February 2003
Commissioned by the Qianlong emperor in 1781, the original copperplate prints from this suite of twenty engravings took five years to complete and depict the architectural splendor within the Qing Imperial complex at Yuan Ming Yuan. The Manchu artist Yi Lantai prepared the designs for the copperplates after perspective paintings by his teacher, Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining). The oversize prints were the first copperplate engravings produced in China solely by Chinese artisans, and each image reveals the appearance of the European style pavilions (Xiyanglou) and water features within the imperial grounds north of the Forbidden City. Upon delivery of the first hundred sets of prints, the emperor ordered a second hundred sets.
This suite of prints was produced in 1977, and is faithful in size to the originals. The use of high-quality Velin de Rives paper closely imitates the 'papier de Chine' of the originals. The reproductions were produced from one of only three known sets of engravings which had not been folded, and thus the detracting central crease is absent. The set of twenty leaves in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, retain the folds in the central axis. The complete set of twenty engravings in the Palace Museum, Beijing, for example, bears a vertical fold down the center of each sheet. Other original sets are preserved in only a small number of institutional collections, including the Peking University Library, the National Library of China, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester.
(Kuniko Okamura)
