款識：
靈鷲山。如來御世垂五十年，多居此山，廣說妙法。今則精舍無存，但餘石基，說法石像亦殘手斷臂，阿難為魔怖懼磐石，詢之導游，亦復茫然，慨念印度佛法之在今日，又不儘如法顯之悲傷也。己丑嘉平月，蜀人張大千爰寫於波羅痆斯。
鈐印：「張爰」、「大千」、「大千西行所得」。
註：靈鷲山，印度著名佛教聖地，相傳釋迦牟尼曾於此宣講〈妙法蓮華經〉、〈無量壽經〉等，法顯、玄奘等中國高僧俱前往朝聖，〈大唐西域記〉即有載其山「孤標特起，既棲鷲鳥，又類高台，空翠相映，濃淡分色」。
本幅寫於己丑嘉平月，時屆一九五〇年一、二月。大千在駐印度大使羅家倫安排下，首度踏足彼邦，赴新德里舉行展覽，又考察佛教藝術，靈鷲山即往訪之地。彼時畫家目力、精力最旺盛，正值工筆技法巔峰期。畫中所繪取遊蹤所及之實貌，山體突兀嶙峋，巉岩叠砌，而林木蔥籠，石佈綠苔，於奇崛險峻中見清潤蘊藉之致。畫家在取景、佈局，俱別出心裁，巖窟中修行者靜坐參悟，益顯莊嚴；說法臺上遊人駐足遠眺，極目處豁然開朗，緩和了山體厚實之壓迫感。
畫上長題詳記此行見聞與感悟，所及「精舍」即山下佛陀舊居。同期另有〈竹園精舍〉一作，尺寸與本幅相若，當同屬此次紀遊所得。大千旅印期間，雖偶涉當地親睹風物人情入畫，如佛像造型、天竺女郎，以至覆斗牛，然公開所見，列明地標地貌者，〈竹園精舍〉外，似僅本幅矣！
