The present vase is an exceptionally rare example of early Ming cloisonné enamel, with an incised six-character Jingtai mark and exhibiting a number of features traditionally associated with the finest cloisonné enamels of the mid-fifteenth century. The elegant pear-shaped body is richly decorated with scrolling lotus blossoms reserved against a luminous turquoise-blue ground, while a finely cast gilt-bronze ascends the shoulder and neck. The harmonious integration of cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze mounts reflects the sophisticated craftsmanship achieved by the Imperial workshops during one of the most important phases in the development of Chinese cloisonné enamels.
Particularly noteworthy is the restrained enamel palette, dominated by shades of blue, white, red, yellow and green, characteristic of early Ming cloisonné production. The cloisons are relatively broad and confidently executed, creating a vigorous decorative effect associated with fifteenth-century works. Equally significant are the substantial gilt-bronze mounts, including the engraved collar and foot rim, whose robust construction and rich gilding compare favourably with other early Ming Imperial cloisonné vessels preserved in museum collections. The engraved lotus-scroll decoration on the foot and neck collars may be compared with that on a cloisonné-enamel incense burner of the early Ming dynasty in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Beijing, 2011, pp.110-111, no.39.
The sculptural further supports an early date. Powerfully modelled and cast in the round, it possesses the dynamism associated with early Ming decorative arts. The creature's elongated body, flowing mane and bifurcated tail are integrated seamlessly into the form of the vessel. Such elaborate gilt-bronze embellishments are found on a small group of highly important Imperial cloisonné vessels traditionally attributed to the early Ming period. Compare, for example, a closely related cloisonné enamel vase with gilt-bronze handles and an incised Jingtai mark, early Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in ., pp.82-83, no.18.
The present vase may also be compared with a related cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze bottle vase, mid-Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Beijing, 2011, pp.146–147, no.63. The treatment of the gilt-bronze likewise recalls that on another cloisonné enamel vase, mid-Ming dynasty, in the same collection, illustrated ., no.69. Taken together, the robust gilt-bronze mounts, broad cloisons, restrained enamel palette and powerful sculptural treatment, make the present vase a rare surviving example of Jingtai mark and period cloisonné.
