Chen Yanning (b.1945) who graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, moved to the United States in 1987, becoming an art professor at Oklahoma City University. In 1991, Chen was awarded the national prize held by Federation of British Artists, and painted portraits for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
His work combines traditional Chinese aesthetic meaning with Western classical painting techniques. This is exemplified in the present work where traditional Chinese values are written into the realist portrait of two ladies. The four-character expression (風調雨順) written on the bell means 'wishing for moderate wind and timely rain'.
